As this exchange is centered around smaller film fandoms, it provides a fantastic opportunity to share the rare movies, music videos, and short films you know and love with others!

If you plan to nominate a small film fandom for the 2020 round that you think others may not be familiar with, or that you're just really excited about, you are encouraged to comment on this post in order to introduce and promote your fandom! There is no required format, but it would be most helpful to include the following details:
  • Full title and release year
  • If applicable, other titles the film is commonly known by (for example, films rereleased in a different language from the original)
  • Genre/tone and medium (live-action movie, animated movie, music video, short film)
  • Specific information on how/where to view the film, such as direct links to places the film can be purchased or legally viewed (if you happen to have other suggestions for obtaining a rare film you are welcome to ask that interested parties PM or email you to discuss those options in more detail, but please avoid linking or discussing legally shady resources on this comm)
  • Brief synopsis of the film
  • Why you love it/why you're recommending it!
Feel free to elaborate further!

The Fall (2006)

From: [personal profile] thinkatory
What the hell, I'll kick this off with a promo.

Title: The Fall (2006)
Genre/medium: Live-action
How to view: It's available on Amazon Prime.
Synopsis: Lee Pace plays a 1920s film stuntman who is potentially crippled by an accident, and whose actress lover is now with another man. A young girl is in the same hospital as him. He tells her a story to gain her trust, which we see vividly play out in her imagination.
Why I love it/recommend it: This is a beautiful film visually, first of all. The acting is superb - the young girl who plays Alexandria is heartbreakingly wonderful, and Lee Pace is absolutely enthralling and painful to watch in a good way. The story his character tells is rich and fascinating. I think it'd be wonderful for a writer to try to emulate the utterly creative storytelling and intense visual medium, or to explore the future of Roy and Alexandria. Maybe Alexandria tells Roy a story? I don't know, watch the movie and see if anything sparks for you.

I should also add: there are only 53 stories tagged with this fandom, and at least ten of them are mistakenly tagged and are actually for the TV show The Fall. It's criminal that people aren't trying this medium and these characters out for size!

Animated shorts - various

From: (Anonymous)
Title: Sometimes The Stars
Genre: 2D animated music video, whimsical/fantasy
Where to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQxPWT-ifyI
Synopsis: A girl from another world takes a trolley to the end of the line.
Why I recommend it: The visuals and dreamy, almost Spirited-Away-style world! This is a gorgeous sad story even if I can't exactly tell what the story is. The stories hinted at here and the worldbuilding potential (from the trolley track, to the floating islands, to the stars around people's necks - canon soulmates?) are what make the idea of fic or art for this so appealing.

Title: War Is My Destiny
Genre: 2D animated music video, some kind of grungey sci-fi/fantasy/post-apocalyptic thing? I cannot describe it but I adore it. The aesthetic is like Mad Max meets Wolf's Rain, if you replaced the cars and wolves with a big fuckoff sword.
Where to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iMr9Pc-a64
Synopsis: Badass warrior dude storms a king's stronghold while reliving his traumatic childhood and the events that brought us here, ft. the cycle of vengeance.
*cw for a lot of blood
Why I recommend it: This is one where I'm much more interested in the characters (and potential ships, though imo nothing in the short is very shippy on its own) than the worldbuilding. The protagonist's backstory has so many gaps in it, and I SO want to know where and how he met his three comrades-in-arms -- their designs are all so distinctive and I feel like I get a clear idea of their personalities from the few seconds they're on screen. Similarly, from the few moments we see her, I am obsessed with the ruler's wife/the queen and want to know so much more about who she is. And of course some kind of future fic about the child (maybe even pairing the child with the warrior?) would be amazing.

Title: Welcome To My Life (dir. Elizabeth Ito (from Adventure Time))
Genre: painterly 3D animated short
Where to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idT98H8TK-U
Synopsis: Documentary-style story following a day in the life of T-Kash, a monster in high school.
Why I recommend it: This is one of the most sincere heartfelt things I've ever seen. The voices are so real and though nothing really "happens", especially not in the way things "happen" in most of the other shorts I've recommended here, I remain compelled by it. It's hard to explain how if you haven't watched the short but I actually think a large part of what I like about it, beyond the uniquely whimsical idea of vaguely kaiju-inspired monsters living in "our" world, is how it's a very quiet and realistic-yet-optimistic look at differences and prejudice, of all things, and kids dealing with that amongst themselves in a very kid-like way, without the short trying painfully to make it into a metaphor for a real issue. I dunno. You can get shippy content out of it between T-Kash and Ian (voice acted by Ian Jones-Quartey, btw), and that would be super cute(/hot if you age them up) but I love T-Kash's family too and would adore gen about them, and also, imagine the little historical vignettes you could write/draw about this world in the style of the short, like an old newspaper article or something!

Title: Ur Aska
Genre: 2D animated short
Where to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_qFznSelLM
Synopsis: The story of two women living together on a mountainside, who begin to be driven apart when one of them starts to slowly transform into something... else.
Why I recommend it: This one has it all: gorgeous visuals, a gripping storyline, fascinating worldbuilding, and an intriguing and hot canon f/f couple (who get some very tender and intimate scenes esp. related to the monster transformation)! You can go in so many directions with this, fic and artwise, fluffy or dark. It has so much potential.

Title: Reversal of the Heart (dir. Caroline Chrisman)
Genre: 2D animated short, fantasy
Where to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHLwG3ioD4Y
Synopsis: When a knight kills a young dragon to bring its soul gem to his lady as a token, he sets in motion an unforeseen chain of events.
Why I recommend it: This is someone's thesis film and clearly a labor of love. The designs and tropes are like a callback to Quest for Camelot, The Last Unicorn, and some of the old Barbie movies, from the human-monster transformation plot to the lovable young wizard to the little monster sidekick with an attitude; given how short the story is everyone is pretty one-note except for the mother and the knight, but that kind of just adds to the charm. Fic or art that expands on the world, dragon society, explores the ending, or creates an AU would be amazing.

Title: Replay (dir. Anthony Voisin)
Genre: 3D animated short, post-apocalyptic
Where to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StggZ9dYMpQ
Synopsis: A young forager and her little brother survive day by day, isolated together in an underground bunker after the apocalypse.
*cw is a spoiler, paste into rot13.com: pbagrag jneavat sbe puvyq qrngu (non-graphic)
Why I recommend it: This short makes masterful use of silence and sound and is a compelling watch even if you aren't drawn to create content about it. I am mostly interested in backstory, and anything that explores the two children who appear later on in the film -- are they actual kids who the protagonists knew, or just standins? What's going on there? Something about what exactly the older sister does during the day and what she sees out there would be fascinating too. I'm also interested in what might happen after the events of the film, even if it's really bleak. Or an AU for the canon events, with some post-canon stories?

self-reply, but just noting, the Replay dialogue is entirely in French and unfortunately the highest quality/official upload stripped the subtitles. The film works whether you can understand the dialogue or not and it isn't plot significant, but here is a version with subtitles, super fuzzy though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sYCtycG2wQ
