The red carpet has been rolled out - the collection is open!

Thank you to everyone who signed up, wrote a PH, and contributed treats for the first installment of Limited Theatrical Release. We hope that everyone enjoys their gifts and that there are many fics within the collection that catch your eye.

The collection will remain open for late treats. Creator reveals will happen one week from today. We will also create a wrap-up post so that those who wish can share their feedback and give suggestions for next year. Think the schedule should change? Rarity reduced or increased? That'll be the post to make your case.

If you signed up for the exchange, submitted an assignment, and did not recieve a gift (and/or your gift contains a DNW), please email us at limitedtheatricalreleasemod@gmail.com ASAP.

The collection will not open before Sunday, August 16 21:59 PM UTC as long as everyone has a gift.

We still have one PH remaining. UPDATE: Looks like everyone has a fic. We will be doing one final count but as of right now we are all good to open on the date/time listed above.

Less than 24 hours remain until the deadline!

You will need to have your completed assignment (or risk auto-defaulting) by 11:59 UTC on Saturday, August 8th. If you currently have your fic saved as a draft, please make sure you actually post it before that time.

There is one outstanding PH. Post-deadline PHs will go up after we do a cursory scan of submitted fics. The collection will not open until everyone has a gift.

If you would like to request an extension or have any questions, email the mods at limitedtheatricalreleasemod@gmail.com or leave a comment here.

Hello everyone! Happy Saturday!

It was recently brought to our attention that the option to offer "fic" or "art" as AO3 tags was erroneously left out of the 2020 signup form. A huge thank you to the person who pointed this out!

It's important to us that this remains a multimedia exchange and you are given the option to match on either fic or art. So, for the 2020 round we will be going a little old school and asking that you use the AO3 optional details/description section of your offer to specify your offered media type(s).

Luckily, this exchange was designed with the option of including additional details/notes related to your offer, so this doesn't require anything else to be changed! Your offered media and additional offer notes will not be visible to anyone but the mods.

Ideal formatting would be something like so:

Offered media: fic, art
Other notes: If possible, I would prefer not to be matched to any request with prompts related to cephalopods, as this is a heavy personal squick.

...but if you use a slightly different format, that's completely fine as long as it's clear at a glance whether you are willing to create fic, art, or either for your recipient!

If someone doesn't have offered media types listed in the additional details of their AO3 offer by the weekend signups are scheduled to close, mods will reach out to them to determine if there is a media preference. If no response is received, that participant will be matched as if they had offered fic only.

Matching will run as normal for an AO3 exchange, with the addition of a hand-matching pass/swap before sending out assignments to ensure you match with someone who has made a compatible medium request. We don't anticipate that this will cause assignment send-outs to be postponed or otherwise affected. :)

We appreciate your flexibility! As always, please continue to let us know if there are any questions, concerns, etc. -- that's how we caught this so early!

Signups are now open for the 2020 round of Limited Theatrical Release!

In brief:
  • You can request 3-10 fandoms and offer 4-10 fandoms, with 1-10 characters/ships per fandom. You can request/offer either fanart, fanfiction, or both.
  • You can request an individual fandom more than once with different character/ship tags (for example, if you want only art for some of your requests and only fic for others), but you must still request at least 3 total unique fandoms.
  • You can request "Any". Please keep in mind that the "Any" box means "any character or relationship in this fandom that has been nominated for this exchange" (including “None”). It does not mean "any character in the fandom as a whole."
  • You can also include DNWs (Do Not Wants), which are things you don't want to see in your gift. DNWs can include anything, but may not be used to railroad your gifter into making one exact type of gift and may not contradict your requests. Contradictory and/or railroading DNWs are not considered enforceable.
  • The 2020 round of this exchange uses "or" matching. Your gifter is only required to create something based on one of your requested characters/ships.
A letters post will go up shortly.

Please comment here if you have any questions or concerns!

Hi everyone! The tagset looks amazing. Make sure to get your final nominations in before the nominations period ends later today, and drop a comment in the promo post to hype your favorite films and rare fandoms!

To reiterate, due to the size of the tagset it is possible that duplicates or misspellings may slip through. Please comment on this post if you notice anything out of whack in one of your fandoms, and we will fix it.

The mods have questions about several nominated tags which have not yet been approved:
  • Fandom: Bumblebee (2018) - This fandom tag is categorized under Transformers (Bay Movies) by AO3. The Transformers (Bay Movies) category currently contains 3306 works, putting it well outside the bounds of eligibility for this exchange. Can someone familiar with the fandom provide a compelling reason for why Bumblebee (2018) should be considered eligible? If not, it will be rejected.
  • Group: f!Thomas Richardson/f!Malcolm Howe (Apostle) - Genderswap AU versions of canon characters are not eligible for the 2020 round of this exchange. Do genderswapped versions of the requested characters exist in the film? If not, the tag will be rejected. [community profile] rule63exchange is currently in its signup period and would be a fantastic place to direct requests like this one!
  • Fandom: Sleeping With Sirens, group: William "Rocky" Sullivan & Jerry Connolly (Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)), group: William "Rocky" Sullivan/Jerry Connolly (Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)), Jerry Connolly, William "Rocky" Sullivan - Sleeping With Sirens appears to be a band fandom, which would not be considered eligible for this exchange, but the included group and character tags were nominated under it, perhaps unintentionally. If you nominated this fandom or these characters, please check to make sure you didn't accidentally hit something you didn't intend to in the dropdown! If there is a different explanation for this group of nominations, please comment here to clarify.
  • Fandom: Road House (1989), Group: James Dalton/Jimmy (Point Break), Group: James Dalton/Wade Garrett (Point Break) - Were these groups intended to be nominated with this fandom? If so, please change the fandom disambiguation to reflect this. If not, please make sure you didn't accidentally hit something you didn't intend to in the dropdown.
  • Fandom: Object Lesson (Fictional Movie Trailer) - This nominated tag appears to be in reference to a fanvid. Fanvids, AMVs, and other derivative works do not fall under our definition of a "film fandom" for the 2020 round of this exchange. Can someone familiar with this work provide a compelling reason for why it should be considered eligible?
An additional reminder:
  • Please keep in mind that nominating in the requested format with the inclusion of a fandom disambiguation e.g. "Group: Character A & Character B (Movie X)" will allow us to approve and associate your character/group nominations much more quickly than if they are missing the disambiguation. If you notice one of your nominated tags lingering for multiple days, check to see if it includes a disambiguation; if it does not, that is most likely the reason for the slower turnaround.

Hello! We are so excited about the outpouring of interest when nominations opened, and the tagset is looking fantastic not only in terms of its size but also its wonderful variety. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far!

Due to the size of the tagset it is possible that duplicates or misspellings may slip through. Please comment in this comm if you notice anything out of whack in one of your fandoms, and we will fix it.

Most nominations went through smoothly (thank you all for so carefully following the rules re:group formatting and "None" nominations -- it has made the approval process so much easier for us!) but the mods have questions about two nominated tags which have not yet been approved:
  • Fandom: Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers - Can someone familiar with the fandom confirm that this is not tie-in material for the series Babylon 5, in the sense that it can be viewed as a standalone film?
  • Fandom: Bumblebee (2018) - This fandom tag is categorized under Transformers (Bay Movies) by AO3. The Transformers (Bay Movies) category currently contains 3306 works, putting it well outside the bounds of eligibility for this exchange. Can someone familiar with the fandom provide a compelling reason for why Bumblebee (2018) should be considered eligible?
Two additional reminders as nominations continue through June 7:
  • Please check the tagset before nominating, as the character/relationship you have in mind may have already been nominated! This is especially important in comparatively larger fandoms. We have already had to reject several duplicate nominations.
  • Please remember that for the 2020 round, the tag "None" is intended to act as an umbrella tag for works dealing with the world of the film in general or works that are not focused on any particular canon character(s). You may nominate specific single characters, relationships between multiple characters including OCs, or "None". Tags such as "Any Character", "Author's Choice Of Character", "Worldbuilding", etc. will be rejected.

Nominations for the 2020 round of Limited Theatrical Release are now open! The tagset can be found here.

Please comment on the eligibility post before submitting your nomination if your nomination meets any of the following conditions:
  • film fandom category has over 1000 works on AO3 or may have over 1000 works at the time the mods check it
  • film is only listed under a Series or All Media Types category on AO3, and that Series/All Media Types category contains over 1000 works
  • film is based on other source material (e.g. a book) and has not yet been given its own AO3 category
  • relationship nomination includes a specific OC tag
As a reminder...

Participants may nominate up to 10 fandoms with up to 20 "characters" per fandom (character tags may be used for single characters, relationships, or "None" tags).

Relationships between two or more characters should be nominated as individual "characters”. To nominate a relationship, simply put "group:" before their names, in the following format:

group: Character X/Character Y (Movie Name)
group: Character X & Character Y (Movie Name)
group: Character X/Character Y & Character Z (Movie Name)

You are welcome to nominate original characters as part of & or / relationships with a canon character. If you are attempting to nominate an OC tag more specific than Original Character(s), Original Male Character(s), Original Female Character(s), or Original Genderless Character(s), please comment on the eligibility post first or your nomination may be rejected.

If you are interested in worldbuilding or any non-canon-character-centric exploration of the nominated movie, you must nominate the tag “None” as an individual “character”, in the following format: None (Movie Name).

Crossovers between eligible movies may be nominated under the fandom "Crossover Fandom." When nominating them, please use the format "group: Character X (Movie A)/Character Y (Movie B) & Character Z (Movie C)", "group: None (Movie C) & None (Movie D)", etc.

For more information on eligibility and nominations please review the 2020 rules post and comment there with any questions. Thank you!

As this exchange is centered around smaller film fandoms, it provides a fantastic opportunity to share the rare movies, music videos, and short films you know and love with others!

If you plan to nominate a small film fandom for the 2020 round that you think others may not be familiar with, or that you're just really excited about, you are encouraged to comment on this post in order to introduce and promote your fandom! There is no required format, but it would be most helpful to include the following details:
  • Full title and release year
  • If applicable, other titles the film is commonly known by (for example, films rereleased in a different language from the original)
  • Genre/tone and medium (live-action movie, animated movie, music video, short film)
  • Specific information on how/where to view the film, such as direct links to places the film can be purchased or legally viewed (if you happen to have other suggestions for obtaining a rare film you are welcome to ask that interested parties PM or email you to discuss those options in more detail, but please avoid linking or discussing legally shady resources on this comm)
  • Brief synopsis of the film
  • Why you love it/why you're recommending it!
Feel free to elaborate further!

Limited Theatrical Release is an exchange for small- to medium-sized film fandoms. For the purposes of the 2020 round, a small- to medium-sized film fandom is defined as any film with fewer than 1000 works on AO3.

This post is provided in order to clarify fandom eligibility for the 2020 round of this exchange.

Blanket Eligibility:
  • Standalone short films with fewer than 1000 works on AO3 are considered eligible for the 2020 round.
  • Animated films with fewer than 1000 works on AO3 are considered eligible for the 2020 round.
  • Music videos with fewer than 1000 works on AO3 are considered eligible for the 2020 round.
  • Films based on or inspired by non-film source material (e.g. a book) are considered eligible for the 2020 round only if the film has its own fandom category on AO3 separate from the source material, and that category contains fewer than 1000 works.
  • Standalone episodes of TV shows such as Black Mirror and tie-in film shorts from multimedia franchises such as Overwatch are not considered eligible for the 2020 round.
If any of the statements below applies to a fandom or character tag you wish to nominate, please comment on this post before submitting the nomination or it will be rejected:

If you wish to nominate a movie with over 1000 works listed on AO3, but you feel the movie should still be eligible for a special reason, please comment on this post to explain why you feel the movie should be eligible before submitting the nomination or it will be automatically rejected.

If you wish to nominate a movie that is only listed under a Series or All Media Types category on AO3 and the AO3 “Series”/"All Media Types" category contains over 1000 works, please comment on this post to clarify before submitting the nomination or it will be rejected.

If you wish to nominate a rare film based on or inspired by other source material (e.g. a book) but the film has not yet been given a fandom category, please comment on this post to clarify before submitting the nomination or it will be rejected.

Generic OCs are considered eligible nominations for the 2020 round as part of & or / relationships with canon characters! If you wish to nominate a specific OC tag (e.g. "Deckard/Original Replicant Character(s)", "Saoirse & Original Daoine Sidhe Character(s)", etc.), please comment on this post to explain why you wish to nominate a specific OC tag, or your nomination may be rejected. Specific OC tags must relate in an immediately obvious way to the fandom you wish to nominate them for (e.g. "Koda & Original Bear Character(s)" for Brother Bear (2003)), and may not be so specific that they could be considered railroading.

Fandom and character eligibility rules are mostly an experiment for the 2020 round, as this is the first time the exchange has run. You'll be welcome to share your feelings about how these eligibility rules impacted your experience at the conclusion of the round!

By signing up for this exchange, you're committing to create a gift for at least one person and receive a gift in return. Gifts can be either fanfiction (at least 1000 words long) or fanart (with clean, finished lineart and on unlined paper if drawing traditionally).

Any movie fandom with fewer than 1000 works on AO3 is considered eligible for this exchange. Fandoms at or near the cutoff and single movies included under a "Series" or "All Media Types" fandom tag with over 1000 works will be reviewed for eligibility on a case by case basis.

If you have a question that is not covered in the rules listed below, please comment on this post with your question and the mods will assist.
